The Experience Of A Lifetime
Who is eligible?
- Minimum age of 16, but cannot be over 18.5 at the time of the exchange
- Applicants may be children of Rotarians or non-Rotarians
- A local Rotary Club must sponsor the student and verify the student's qualifications
- Must be able to be a good ambassador for Rotary, the United States and themselves
- Must be able to spend one year in a foreign country
- Must be able to attend mandatory orientations and have parents present.
This is a not a vacation.
- Both the student and family must commit as they will both be required to fulfill responsibilities
- The student must attend school and receive acceptable grades.
- The student must work to understand and live with new families and in a new culture. There is no right or wrong-it is just different.
- Some countries have mandatory language camps or minimum language skills as requirements. Cost may be borne by the student in some cases.
What is the timing of the program?
- Exchange usually start in late August and are considered full term early June. The student may stay as long as their host allow and their visa is valid, but not more than 12 months.
- Natural parents are typically allowed to visit late in the exchange year but are expressly discouraged from visiting during the holidays.
What is the application procedure?
- Register for the program on this site and contact your local club by November 1st to meet the November 15th deadline. Please note you must register on this site, completing other applications will likely result in a request to start over.
- The sponsoring club will forward the application to the district upon acceptance.
- The District will then notify the student of the interview weekend, which occurs in early December.
- Students and their parents must attend a second, mandatory, orientation in May in Grand Lake.
What are the costs involved?
- There is a $95 application fee to cover the cost of the interview weekend.
- There is a second fee of $400 due at the May/Grand Lake orientation to cover pins, Rotary jacket, etc.
- An international insurance policy must be purchased (approx $450) from CISI-Bolduc
- Students and their families are responsible for travel costs and passport/visa
- Students receive a monthly stipend from their hosting Rotary club which will be in line with local cost and expenses for similar aged kids.
- Any extra spending money-dependent on student's spending habits and personal desires
